Copper and selenium supplementation in the diet of Brangus steers on the nutritional characteristics of meat R. Bras. Zootec.
Netto,Arlindo Saran; Zanetti,Marcus Antonio; Del Claro,Gustavo Ribeiro; Vilela,Flávio Garcia; Melo,Mariza Pires de; Correa,Lísia Bertonha; Pugine,Silvana Marina Piccoli.
Twenty-eight Brangus cattle were used to determine the effect of copper and selenium supplementation on the carcass characteristics, fatty acid composition of the longissimus dorsi muscle and on the copper and selenium concentrations in the liver. The treatments were: no supplementation of copper or selenium; 2 mg Se/kg DM as sodium selenite; 40 mg Cu/kg DM as copper sulfate; and 2 mg Se/kg DM as sodium selenite and 40 mg Cu/kg DM as copper sulfate. The fat thickness, rib eye area and fatty acid composition of the longissimus dorsi muscle were not affected by treatments. There was no effect on carcass yield and cooling loss with the supplementation of copper, selenium or selenium × copper in the levels studied. For the ether extract concentration in the...

Levels and trends of the emerging contaminants HBCDs (hexabromocyclododecanes) and PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) in marine shellfish along French coasts ArchiMer
Munschy, Catherine; Marchand, Philippe; Venisseau, A.; Veyrand, B.; Zendong, Z..
The levels and congener patterns of HBCDs (hexabromocyclododecanes) and PFCs (perfluorinated compounds) were determined in filter-feeding molluscs collected in 2008 and 2010 along the coasts of mainland France. alpha-HBCD and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) were detected in all samples, revealing widespread contamination of the coastal environment by these emerging contaminants. The spatial distribution of Sigma-HBCD concentrations showed higher median levels in samples from the Mediterranean Sea and English Channel respectively, i.e. 0.19 ng g(-1) wet weight (ww) and 0.08 ng g(-1) ww, related to high anthropogenic pressure from urban and industrial activities, while the median concentration was 0.05 ng g(-1) ww in samples from the Atlantic coast. Among...

METROC : évaluation des apports de contaminants chimiques de la métropole marseillaise au milieu marin ArchiMer
Jany, Cassandre; Zebracki, Mathilde.
METROC program (part of the MEDICIS program about study and fate of the chemical contamination in Western Mediterranean Sea) focuses on sources and wastes issued by large metropolis, with the agglomeration of Marseille as a pilot site. This report presents the results of a sampling campaign in rivers and urban discharges in Marseille and on different types of contaminants (metals, PAH, PCB and PBDE) in dissolved and particulate phases, in dry and rain periods. Results show that concentrations of pollutants are greater in Aygalades river (metals and organic contaminants) and in Emissaire 2, sewer overflows and torrents. From the results of the analysis and discharge given by the DEA, we estimated partially the flows of pollutants which show that the first...

Use of aqueous extract of noni in extender for sheep semen freezing Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Nascimento,A.L.C.; Santos,A.D.F.; Azevedo,H.C.; Velarde,J.M.D.S.; Lima,C.A.; Pereira,M.A.; Pinheiro,G.O.; Gomes,L.C..
ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the action of aqueous extract of noni in an extender for sheep semen freezing. Treatments differed in inclusion of aqueous extract of noni in the extender: T1 ˗ no addition; T2 ˗ 24µg/mL; T3 ˗ 72µg/mL; and T4 ˗ 120µg/mL. Ejaculates were collected, diluted in the four treatments, and frozen. After thawing, the semen was subjected to a thermoresistance test and evaluated for subjective motility, vigor, membrane integrity assessment by hypo-osmotic swelling test, live-dead assay, computer-assisted sperm analysis and the status of sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction. Data were subjected to ANOVA, and then to Student Newman Keuls’s test at 5% significance level. In the thermoresistance test after two hours of...
